Master Fiore's Training Longsword with Spatulated Tip for HEMA Fencing
Features and Safe Use of the Training Sword
This weapon is designed from the ground up for full-contact Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA). The blade, featuring a prominent fuller, is forged from extremely durable spring steel, which is expertly heat-treated to a hardness of 49-53 HRC. This material guarantees excellent resistance to edge damage. For maximum safety during thrusting techniques, the blade has a flex rating of approximately 12 kg (26.5 lbs) and is finished with a spatulated tip. This thickening and widening of the point effectively distributes the force of the impact over a larger area, drastically reducing the risk of penetrating fencing gear.
The crossguard is also heat-treated to provide extra toughness and resistance against deformation during strong parries. The 23 cm (9.1 inches) long grip is carefully wrapped in genuine leather, ensuring a firm and comfortable hold even with massive fencing gloves. The entire construction is highly robust, with the blade's tang securely peened over the massive faceted pommel, which serves as a perfect counterweight to the long blade.
Historical Context of Training Swords
While the famous federschwerts dominated the German fencing school, this sword, with its profile and fullered blade, is more reminiscent of the real sharp swords of the 14th and 15th centuries used in the Italian fencing school (whose famous representative was Fiore dei Liberi). The training weapons of that time had to accurately simulate the weight and balance of a real sword so that the muscle memory acquired during training would also work on the battlefield. Today, thanks to modern metallurgy and safety innovations like the spatulated tip, we can study these ancient techniques with much more dedication and safety.

Care, Maintenance, and Safety Guidelines
Although the sword is designed for contact use, it requires regular maintenance. High-carbon spring steel is not rust-proof. After every training session, we strongly recommend wiping the blade thoroughly dry and conserving it with a thin layer of gun oil or a special protective wax. Avoid striking unyielding, solid targets such as wood, steel pipes, or stone, which would lead to fatal damage to the weapon. The sword is intended for fencing against steel swords of similar parameters. During training, always use protective equipment: a certified HEMA mask with back-of-head protection, a padded gambeson, and special gloves for historical fencing.
A practical padded weapon transport bag and a high-quality set of gun oils for maintenance are a great addition to this sword.
