Knightly Longsword Henry of Leipa, Functional Weapon, Spring Steel
Historical Context and Typology
In terms of shape, this sword corresponds to the Oakeshott typology XIIa to XIIIa, making it a typical longsword (often called a bastard sword or hand-and-a-half sword) that appeared on European battlefields predominantly in the 13th and 14th centuries. Its purpose was to provide the warrior with the advantage of a longer reach and a devastating cut, allowing both one-handed use in combination with a shield and a two-handed grip to deliver a much stronger blow. A commander of that era would undoubtedly have appreciated a similarly designed weapon in his armoury.
Materials and Craftsmanship
The blade of the sword is forged from high-quality spring steel. The weapon is fully functional and designed for maximum reliability. The heat treatment process for this model is outsourced to a specialized external workshop for quality and quantity control, yet a high durability and a blade hardness ranging from 49-53 HRC are guaranteed. To reduce weight and improve overall flexibility, the blade features a pronounced central fuller. The crossguard and the faceted scent-stopper pommel are made of stainless steel, which significantly facilitates overall maintenance. The handle consists of a solid wooden core covered with brown synthetic leather (PU leather) imitating historical materials. The package also includes a sturdy wooden scabbard covered with the same PU leather, tastefully decorated with an embossed motif, and equipped with a practical suspension belt.
Safety Warnings and Usage
The weapon is fully functional and features a sharp blade. It is therefore ideal for cutting tests (tameshigiri on appropriate materials), solo practice of historical techniques, and serves as a high-quality visual prop for re-enactment. We strongly warn: For safety reasons, this sword is strictly not intended for contact fencing, HEMA sparring, or any human-to-human combat! There is a risk of fatal injury. The use of the weapon is entirely at your own risk, and neither we nor the manufacturer bear any responsibility for any damage or injury caused by improper use.
Maintenance of the Edged Weapon
To ensure your sword serves you as long as possible and always looks as good as new, it requires regular care. After each use, especially after contact with bare hands or moisture, the blade must be carefully wiped dry and treated with a suitable armourer's oil. This will prevent the formation of surface corrosion on the carbon steel. Store the sword in a dry environment, ideally outside the scabbard, so that any residual moisture does not damage the blade's surface.
