Lined Heraldic Tabard with Rampant Lion – Red & Black Quartered

Design and Craftsmanship

This tabard is not just an ordinary piece of cloth. Thanks to the lining, it is heavier and more durable, which you will appreciate especially in cooler weather or during contact fencing, as the fabric better resists abrasion from chainmail. The cut is straight and fitted in the torso, while the skirt flares out from the waist down to allow free leg movement. The skirt features a riding slit in both the front and back – a crucial detail for horsemen, allowing the tabard to drape beautifully over the horse's flanks without bunching up in the saddle.

The dominant feature is the large appliqué of a rampant lion on the left side of the chest. The lion, a symbol of strength and royal majesty, is colour-coordinated with the opposing fields of the tabard. For the perfect silhouette, we recommend cinching the tabard at the waist with a sturdy leather belt (belt not included).

Historical Context: What is Mi-Parti?

The colour division you see on this tabard is called mi-parti (French for "divided"). This fashion style emerged in the High Middle Ages and served not only for decoration but primarily for identification. Knights and their retinues wore their house colours divided in this way to be clearly recognizable in battle. The lion was one of the most common heraldic beasts, symbolizing courage, rule, and invincibility.

Care Instructions

Thanks to the high-quality material, maintenance is relatively easy, but please follow these rules:

  • Machine wash on a gentle cycle at 40°C (104°F).
  • Use detergent for coloured laundry to prevent the red and black from fading.
  • Do not tumble dry! Let it air dry on a hanger.

Please note: The package includes the tabard only. Chainmail, sword, belt, and boots are sold separately.
