This type of garment, commonly referred to as a tabard or heraldic surcoat, was extensively used by European nobility during the High and Late Middle Ages, approximately from the twelfth to the fifteenth century. Originally, the surcoat was worn over chainmail to protect the hot metal from the scorching sun of the Holy Land during the crusades, whilst also dampening the impact of rain and moisture. However, it very quickly became an essential identification feature. Distinctive heraldic symbols, such as the white cross on a red field, clearly identified the knight's allegiance on the chaotic battlefield as well as during popular knightly tournaments.

When and How to Wear the Costume

This clothing set is the absolutely ideal choice for portraying a knight, a member of a military order, or a noble lord. You will find it perfectly suited for historical reenactment, fantasy LARP, wooden sword fighting, or medieval fairs. The attire consists of two layers. First, you put on the long-sleeved under-shirt, which features a practical lace-up neck and a distinctive collar. Over this, you pull the surcoat itself, which has shorter sleeves ending just above the elbows. The laced, patterned cuffs of the shirt form a beautiful decorative element once worn. We must point out that the leather belt, leather pouch, and leather footwear shown in the pictures are not included in the delivery.

Materials, Custom Tailoring, and Care Instructions

The men's surcoat is made from high-quality genuine velvet woven from 100% cotton, which gives the garment an appropriately noble and rich appearance. The under-shirt is crafted from a very strong yet breathable blend of 55% linen and 45% cotton, ensuring excellent sweat wicking. This set is custom-made upon request in other colours according to our fabric swatches, and we will gladly tailor it exactly to your measurements without any extra charge.

To ensure the natural materials retain their beauty for as long as possible, we strongly recommend entrusting the cleaning to a professional dry cleaner. If you nevertheless decide on home care, very gentle hand washing in lukewarm water with a mild detergent is absolutely necessary. Never dry the garment in a tumble dryer and do not iron it directly over the velvet pile. Ironing must always be done very carefully from the reverse side only; otherwise, you could permanently burn and destroy the velvet's texture.
