Originally, the surcoat was worn over chainmail or plate armour to protect the metal from the scorching sun and moisture. However, it very quickly became an essential identification feature. Distinctive heraldic symbols, such as the rampant lion and the royal lily (fleur-de-lis), clearly identified the knight's allegiance on the chaotic battlefield as well as during popular knightly tournaments. Later, it also became a highly representative courtly garment.

This garment is the absolutely ideal choice for portraying a knight, a noble lord, or the king's champion. You will find it perfectly suited for historical reenactment, fantasy LARP, or medieval fairs. The surcoat is sleeveless, reaches knee-length, and features a practical, decorative front split that allows for absolute freedom of movement when walking and fighting. It is worn as an outer layer over chainmail, a gambeson, or a linen under-doublet. We must point out that the padded under-doublet and dark trousers shown in the pictures are not included in the delivery.

The surcoat is precisely tailored from a combination of high-quality materials, comprising 100% cotton, sturdy fustian (100% cotton), and luxurious genuine velvet (100% cotton). These natural fabrics ensure excellent breathability and durability. The garment is richly decorated with heraldic appliques of a lion and lilies and is carefully trimmed along the edges with a decorative leonine braid. Upon request, the garment can be custom-made in other colours according to our available fabric swatches, and we will gladly tailor it exactly to your measurements without any extra charge. To ensure the natural materials retain their long-lasting beauty and brilliant colours, we strongly recommend entrusting the cleaning to a professional dry cleaner. If home care is absolutely necessary, very gentle hand washing in lukewarm water with a mild detergent is required. Never dry the garment in a tumble dryer and iron it very carefully from the reverse side only, to avoid damaging the velvet pile and appliques.
