Historical Context and Usage

This attire is based on historical examples from the 13th and 14th centuries, the era of the High Gothic. Men-at-arms, bodyguards, and retainers of noble courts often wore surcoats (also known as a tabard) over their chainmail or plate armour, as well as regular civilian clothing. The primary purpose of the surcoat was to protect expensive armour from the sun and rain, whilst also providing clear identification of the warrior on the battlefield via vibrant heraldic colours. Today, you can perfectly utilise this costume for historical re-enactment, medieval fairs, LARP, or as a theatrical costume for roles such as town guards, mercenaries, and knights.

Materials and Craftsmanship

The costume is made from 100% natural materials, providing excellent breathability and an authentic appearance. Both the under-tunic and the outer surcoat are tailored from genuine cotton velvet, which historically symbolised wealth and allegiance to a significant household. The cowl is crafted from sturdy and durable cotton fustian. The surcoat features a finely detailed heraldic coat of arms on the chest and front skirt, alongside a practical front slit that ensures unrestricted movement during swordplay or horseback riding.

Care and Maintenance

To ensure your costume serves you as long as possible and retains its rich colours and velvety sheen, we highly recommend taking it to a professional dry cleaner. If you choose to wash it at home, hand wash it exclusively in lukewarm water using a mild detergent. Never wring out velvet; simply press the water gently into a towel and lay it flat to dry in the shade. Always iron inside out on the lowest setting, ideally using steam, to avoid damaging the fine pile of the velvet.

Important Note on Accessories

Please note that any additional clothing pieces or accessories shown in the photographs (such as the leather belt, pouch, medieval hose, and historical footwear) are not included in the delivery.

For a complete and historically accurate appearance, we recommend pairing the costume with a long leather belt with a brass buckle and leather poulaines (pointed shoes) that correspond to 14th-century fashion.
