Medieval Tabard with Double Chevrons – Blue & Yellow

Design and Practical Use

The tabard is made of 100% cotton, a material you will appreciate especially on hot summer days or during physical exertion. Unlike synthetic fabrics, cotton breathes. The cut is straight, loose, and open at the sides, ensuring maximum freedom of movement – whether you are running, fencing, or riding a horse.

A key feature is its adjustability. At the waist, you will find practical tie strings on the sides, allowing you to tighten the tabard exactly to your figure or according to the layers of clothing you are wearing underneath. You can easily wear it over a linen tunic, but also over a bulky gambeson or chainmail armour. The motif of two yellow chevrons (inverted "V" shapes) on the chest is carefully sewn on (appliqué), not just printed, which increases the durability and aesthetic value of the costume. For the best look, we recommend belting the tabard at the waist with a leather belt (belt not included).

Historical Context: Why Did Knights Wear Tabards?

The tabard, also known as a surcoat, became widely popular in the 12th century during the Crusades. Originally, it had a purely practical purpose – it protected metal armour from heating up in the sun in the hot climate of the Holy Land, preventing the knight from overheating. However, it quickly became the ideal surface for heraldry. In the chaotic confusion of battle, when faces were hidden under helmets, the colours and symbols on the tabard served to distinguish friend from foe. This specific style with a simple geometric pattern corresponds to the fashion of the 12th to 14th centuries, as seen in the Maciejowski Bible or the Codex Manesse.

Care Instructions

To keep this garment looking like new for as long as possible, give it some care:

  • We recommend hand wash only in lukewarm water.
  • Be careful with colour bleeding – blue and yellow are contrasting colours, and washing in hot water could cause discoloration.
  • Do not tumble dry; let it air dry naturally.

Please note: The delivery includes the tabard only. Chainmail, sword, belt, shoes, and other accessories shown in the photos are for illustration purposes and are sold separately.
