Art Gladius Slicing / Carving Knife | 8-Inch 440 Steel Blade (58-60 HRC) | Sandalwood Handle | Made in Spain

Appearance and Construction

The dominant feature of this knife is its long blade, measuring approximately 210 mm (around 8 inches). It's relatively narrow, which minimises friction and allows it to glide smoothly through meat. The tip is sharp for easily starting the cut. The blade is crafted from 440 stainless steel. Interestingly, while the manufacturer specifies a mirror polish finish, the blade visually features an attractive hammered or textured finish on its upper part, which can help reduce food sticking. The "GLADIUS" logo is located near the handle. The blade has a thickness of approx. 2.5 mm, giving it solid rigidity. The reddish sandalwood handle features an ergonomic, curved shape for a comfortable hold and is finished with a metal bolster with decorative accent rings, matching the smaller paring knife in this range. The total length of the knife is approx. 335 mm, and it weighs around 187 g.

The Razor-Sharp 440 Steel Blade

A long blade requires high-quality steel to maintain its edge along the entire length. The 440 stainless steel used, hardened to 58−60 HRC, guarantees you:

  • Precise and Clean Cuts: The knife arrives razor-sharp, ready to slice without tearing.
  • Long-Lasting Sharpness: The steel's hardness ensures the edge stays sharp for a long time, even when carving large joints.
  • Strength and Stability: The 2.5 mm thickness gives the blade sufficient stiffness so it doesn't flex during slicing.
  • Corrosion Resistance: 440 steel reliably resists corrosion from meat juices and other elements.
  • Easy Edge Maintenance: The edge is easy to maintain and sharpen.

The Sandalwood Handle – Elegance and Comfort

The sandalwood handle adds an aesthetic dimension to the knife's functionality:

  • Beautiful Appearance: The reddish colour and fine grain of the wood lend the knife a touch of luxury.
  • Comfortable Grip: The ergonomic shape fits perfectly in the hand and allows for secure control of the long blade.
  • Durable Material: Sandalwood is hard and relatively resistant to moisture.
  • Pleasant Feel: The smooth surface of the wood feels pleasant to the touch.

What is This Knife For?

This knife is a specialist for slicing:

  • Carving roasted meats (roast beef, pork loin, turkey...).
  • Slicing ham (whole joints or smaller pieces).
  • Cutting large fillets of smoked fish (salmon).
  • Portioning cake layers (thanks to its length and clean cut).
  • Anywhere you need long, thin, and clean slices created with a single, smooth cutting motion.

Caring for Your Knife – For Perfect Slices for Years

Proper care ensures longevity and performance:

  • Hand Wash Only: Never put it in the dishwasher! You would damage the steel and the sandalwood. Wash by hand with warm water and a little washing-up liquid, then dry thoroughly immediately.
  • Suitable Storage: Not loose in a drawer. The long blade is best protected in a dedicated slot in a knife block or on a magnetic rack (ensure it's long and strong enough).
  • Maintaining the Edge: Use a honing steel regularly to keep the edge aligned. For sharpening, use the full length of a sharpening stone to ensure an even edge along the entire blade, or entrust it to a professional. The sharpening angle is approx. 15−20 degrees.
  • Handle Care: Protect the wood from prolonged exposure to moisture. Occasional wiping with a food-safe mineral oil will keep the wood in good condition.

Safety First

Working with a long and very sharp knife requires concentration:

  • Use a sufficiently large and stable cutting board.
  • Slice with smooth strokes, cutting away from your body.
  • Keep the hand holding the meat at a safe distance from the blade.
  • Never try to catch a falling knife.
  • Store the knife safely, with the edge facing away from you, and out of reach of children.

With the Art Gladius slicing knife with sandalwood handle, you'll become a master of presentation. Impress your guests with perfectly carved slices and enjoy the feeling of working with a high-quality and beautiful tool made in Spain.
