Forged Armour-Piercing Arrowhead with Wings

Detailed Description of Appearance

The arrowhead is characterized by its slender, elongated body, which terminates in a sharp, faceted tip for maximum penetration. Just below the blade are two small, swept-back wings (or barbs). These features improved the arrow's stability in flight while also making it more difficult to extract from a target. The entire head has a dark, matte finish with visible forging marks, emphasizing its authentic character. The lower part consists of a conical socket for mounting onto an arrow shaft.

Specialized Munitions of the Middle Ages

In the late Middle Ages, as armour technology advanced, archers had to adapt. While broadheads were effective against unarmoured targets, they lost their punch against gambesons and mail. This led to the creation of specialized heads like this one. Its narrow profile allowed it to more easily penetrate the layers of fabric and padding of a gambeson or to find a gap in mail armour where a wider head could not fit.

An Interesting Fact: The Arms Race Between Arrowhead and Armour

The development of arrowheads in the Middle Ages was essentially a constant arms race. As soon as smiths improved armour, arrow makers responded with new, more effective head designs. This evolved from the wide heads used against lightly clad Vikings to the narrow, hardened "bodkins" designed to pierce plate armour in the Hundred Years' War. This winged arrowhead is an example of a more versatile solution that combined piercing capability with greater wounding potential.

Care and Safety

How to Care for Your Arrowhead

This arrowhead is made from carbon steel, which can corrode. To keep it looking new for as long as possible, it requires proper care. Always dry it thoroughly after use. For long-term storage, we recommend coating the surface with a thin layer of preservative oil. Store it in a dry environment.

Safe Use

While the materials, construction, and craftsmanship would permit practical use, the manufacturer does not provide a warranty for damage incurred from live shooting. Therefore, we offer this arrowhead for purely decorative, collectible, or costume purposes.

Important Notice: This is a sharp object with a functional point. Exercise extreme caution during any handling, especially when mounting it on a shaft, to prevent injury. Never aim or shoot at people or animals, and always ensure you have a safe backstop behind your target.
