15th Century Italian Cuirass | Churburg Style Plate Armour

Detailed Armour Description

This magnificent cuirass is handcrafted from 1.6 mm (16 gauge) mild steel, giving it proper strength and an authentic appearance. The smooth, lightly polished surface and precise craftsmanship will immediately catch your eye.

Construction and Parts of the Cuirass

  • Breastplate and Backplate: The core consists of an anatomically shaped breastplate and backplate. They are designed to follow the contours of the body while effectively deflecting cuts and thrusts.
  • Faulds (Tassets): The lower part of the cuirass is composed of two articulated lames, known as faulds. This articulated construction protects the abdomen while allowing you complete freedom of movement and the ability to bend comfortably at the waist.
  • Leather Straps: The individual plates are connected by sturdy and adjustable straps made of genuine leather. Thanks to the high-quality brass buckles, you can easily adjust the cuirass to fit your body perfectly. The straps run over the shoulders and along the sides.

How Can You Use This Cuirass?

This piece of plate armour is an ideal choice for a wide range of activities. You will be the star at:

  • LARP (Live Action Role-Playing) events
  • Historical fencing and reenactment gatherings
  • Medieval fairs and festivals
  • Theatrical performances and film shoots
  • Creating your perfect fantasy or historical costume

The cuirass can also serve as an impressive decoration for your home or as a unique collector's item.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Although the cuirass is made of strong steel, it is not certified as personal protective equipment. It is not intended for full-contact or heavy combat sports such as HMB, buhurt, or the Battle of the Nations. These activities require specially modified and tested armour.

For the best fit, we recommend wearing the cuirass over a gambeson or padded jack. Measure yourself carefully and choose the correct size.

The Cuirass in History

Italian armour of the 15th century, often referred to as the "Churburg" style after the famous armoury at Churburg Castle in South Tyrol, represented a technological peak. Armourers from Milan and other Italian cities were renowned for their skill in creating smooth, rounded forms that not only looked magnificent but also enhanced the armour's protective qualities by causing weapons to glance off more easily.

A Fun Fact From History

Did you know that the armoury at Churburg Castle contains one of the largest and best-preserved private collections of armour in the world? Some pieces are in almost perfect condition and belonged to the original owners of the castle, the Matsch family. It is these very originals that serve as the models for many modern replicas, including this one.

Caring for Your New Armour

Your cuirass will arrive carefully preserved with a layer of oil. You can easily remove this layer with a cloth or paper towel. To maintain its shine and protect it from rust, we recommend wiping the armour dry after each use (especially in a humid environment) and lightly coating it with a preservation oil, such as Ballistol. Keep the leather parts dry and occasionally treat them with a leather care product.
