Plate Armour: Italian Cuirass Churburg Style (Early 15th C.) – 2nd Quality
Note on "2nd Quality" condition: Minor spots of surface rust may appear on this cuirass. This is a cosmetic defect that can be easily removed by yourself, for example, using a metal cleaning rubber (SKU: 1302) or fine steel wool (SKU: 2103). These minor imperfections do not affect the structural integrity of the armour, but allow you to acquire a high-quality piece of gear at an unbeatable price.
Construction and Craftsmanship
The armour is handmade from sturdy 1.6 mm (16 gauge) cold-rolled mild steel. This metal thickness represents an ideal compromise between durability and weight, which you will appreciate during all-day wear. The surface is polished to a semi-gloss finish, giving the armour a luxurious appearance.
- Breastplate and Backplate: The cuirass consists of a front (breast) and a rear (back) plate. The breastplate is characterized by its domed shape, which helps to deflect blows to the side. A distinctive feature is the V-shaped stop-rib at the neckline, which served to catch weapon points, preventing sliding blades from endangering the wearer's neck.
- Articulated Fauld: The lower abdomen is protected by a fauld—three horizontal steel lames riveted to slide into one another during movement (e.g., when mounting a horse or squatting). This guarantees maximum comfort.
- Strapping System: The front and back sections are connected by sturdy straps made of genuine leather fitted with brass buckles. This allows you to adjust the circumference of the armour and the shoulder height precisely to your physique or the thickness of your gambeson.
Historical Context
This type of armour is based on finds housed at Churburg Castle (Castel Coira) in South Tyrol. The armoury of this castle holds one of the most significant collections in the world, originally belonging to the Matsch family. Cuirasses of this type were worn approximately between 1390 and 1420. They represented the technological peak of their time—the rounded "globose" chest shapes were designed so that lances and swords would glance off, increasing the knight's passive protection without unnecessarily increasing the thickness of the plate.
Usage and Safety
This cuirass is designed primarily for:
- LARP and Cosplay: Looks great and withstands the rigours of the field.
- Historical Fencing and Re-enactment: Suitable for training and scenic performances.
- Costume Festivals: The ideal accessory for medieval fairs.
Important Warning: Although the steel is 1.6 mm (16 gauge) thick, this armour is not certified for full-contact sports such as Buhurt, HMB, or Battle of the Nations. Hardened steel and specific safety standards are required for these extreme sports. For your comfort and safety, we strongly recommend wearing a thick gambeson or chainmail shirt under the cuirass.

Armour Care
To keep the armour looking like new for as long as possible (and to prevent the spread of corrosion on this 2nd quality item), it requires care. Mild steel is not stainless.
- Wipe the armour dry after every use; sweat and moisture are the main enemies of metal.
- Regularly apply a preserving oil (e.g., WD-40 or Ballistol).
- Store it in a dry place.
- If rust appears, remove it with steel wool or a polishing pad and re-oil the spot.
- Treat the leather straps occasionally with leather grease to keep them flexible.
