Bronze Viking Belt Tip, 5.3 cm, Birka Style Knotwork - Outlet
Give your Viking belt the perfect finish with this historically faithful bronze strap end. This small but significant detail transforms an ordinary strap into an authentic piece of Viking kit. The belt tip is crafted using the ancient lost-wax casting method and its surface is adorned with complex knotwork in the so-called Birka style, typical of the 8th to 10th centuries. Ornate fittings like this not only protected the end of the belt from fraying but also served as a sign of the owner's status and wealth. The strap end is designed for narrow belts up to 1.5 cm wide and is the ideal choice for re-enactment, LARP, or for anyone who appreciates precisely crafted details for their costume. The Art of Viking Masters
The design of this strap end is inspired by archaeological finds from Birka, one of the most important trading centres of the Viking world. The intricate knotwork with geometric motifs is an example of art styles such as Borre or Jelling. These abstract patterns were not merely decorative; they often carried a deeper symbolism related to fate, eternity, and the interconnectedness of all living things. With this belt fitting, you are not just wearing a piece of metal, but a legacy of the rich Norse mythology and art.
Function and Installation
The main function of a strap end (or belt tip) was to prevent damage to the leather end of the strap while also adding weight to ensure it hung correctly. The installation is permanent and requires basic skills.
- Take a leather belt with a maximum width of 1.5 cm. Trim the end of the strap so that it fits into the opening of the strap end.
- Mark the exact position of the two posts on the back of the strap end onto the leather.
- Using an awl or a punch, create two corresponding holes in the leather.
- Push the posts of the strap end through the holes in the leather.
- Place the belt on a solid surface (a small anvil, a thick piece of metal) with the decorative side of the strap end facing down.
- Using a hammer, carefully peen the ends of the two posts. You can hammer them flat directly onto the leather or use small metal washers (rosettes) to ensure an even more secure fastening.
This process will permanently and securely attach the strap end to your belt.
