Fantasy Helmet "Nordic Conqueror" with Real Horns

Construction and Comfort

The helmet consists of riveted steel segments with a thickness of approx. 1 mm (19 gauge). What catches the eye at first glance is the finish, resembling aged copper or bronze, giving the helmet an authentic, battle-worn look. The dominant feature is, of course, the genuine bovine horns, which are securely screwed in from the inside (each with one screw), so you don't have to worry about them coming loose.

To ensure comfortable wear, the helmet is equipped with:

  • Movable Cheek Plates: These are suspended on sturdy leather strips and lined with soft suede on the inside for your comfort.
  • Neck Guard: The back of the helmet extends into a lobster-tail style guard, protecting your nape from unexpected strikes from behind.
  • Adjustable Liner: Inside, you will find a leather suspension liner (spider type), ensuring the helmet sits stably on your head without pressing directly on the crown.
  • Brass Decoration: Riveted arches above the eyebrows not only reinforce the structure but also give the helmet that frowning, menacing expression.

Historical Context: The Horned Helmet Myth

As a historian, I must share an interesting fact with you. Although the horned helmet is an iconic symbol of Vikings in pop culture, you would search for it in vain on the battlefields of the Early Middle Ages. Historically documented Viking helmets (like the one from Gjermundbu) did not have horns – in the heat of battle, they would have been more of a hindrance, as enemy weapons could easily catch on them. This myth was popularized in the 19th century by costume designer Carl Emil Doepler for Wagner's operas. Therefore, this helmet is a tribute to heroic fantasy and romantic ideas of the Northmen, not an archaeological reconstruction.

Usage and Safety

This helmet is primarily a decorative and costume item. Due to the steel thickness (1 mm / 19 gauge) and the presence of solid horns, it is not intended for full-contact historical combat (such as Buhurt) or HEMA duels. However, it is an excellent choice for LARP and theatre.

Warning: The horns are hard and pointed. When moving in crowds or during stage combat, please take extra care not to injure those around you. It is a striking feature that requires a responsible wearer.

Helmet Care

To keep this masterpiece looking new for a long time:

  1. Metal: Despite the finish, it is good practice to occasionally oil the helmet (e.g., with gun oil or WD-40) to prevent rust, especially if it gets damp.
  2. Leather: Treat the leather parts and straps occasionally with leather balm to prevent cracking.
  3. Horns: As this is a natural material, do not expose them to extreme temperature or humidity changes. You can lightly wipe them with vegetable oil to maintain their natural shine.

A massive fur cloak and a high-quality replica of a Viking axe or sword would be the perfect addition to this helmet to complete the look of a fearless warrior.
