Concolitanus La Tène Celtic Conical Helmet

Historical Prototype and Significance

This unique helmet is inspired by archaeological finds dating back to the 3rd to 2nd century BCE, representing the peak of the La Tène period. This conical helmet style was widely worn throughout the Alpine and pre-Alpine regions, as well as northern Italy (Cisalpine Gaul), where Celtic tribes clashed with the expanding Roman Republic. The helmet is named in honor of Concolitanus, a prominent Celtic chieftain of the Gaesatae tribe who led military campaigns against Rome in the 3rd century BCE.

The tall conical shape of the bowl served a vital practical purpose: it efficiently deflected downward strikes from swords and maces away from the head, dampening direct impact forces. The helmet features anatomically shaped cheekguards attached via sturdy hinges, alongside a flared neck guard protecting the nape. The cheekguards are inner-lined with soft leather and feature leather ties at the bottom to secure the helmet under the chin.

Please note that this is not protective armor designed for full-contact heavy combat such as buhurt or Battle of the Nations. For comfortable wearing and shock absorption, we recommend wearing a padded cap or arming cap underneath.

Care and Safety Instructions

The steel surface requires regular maintenance to prevent rust. After every use, especially following exposure to moisture or sweat, dry the helmet thoroughly with a soft cloth and apply a protective oil coating (such as Ballistol or mineral oil). Condition the leather parts periodically with leather balm. Store the helmet in a dry, well-ventilated area. Do not subject the helmet to destructive full-contact impacts that could cause injury or deformation.
