A scold's bridle (also brank), was an instrument of punishment used primarily on women, as a form of torture and public humiliation. The device was an iron muzzle in an iron framework that enclosed the head. Most of the condemned persons stood in the pillory with a notice on his/her neck, explaining the committed offense. So could any citizen who was passing at the pillory, mock the person with impunity. Or the offender´s head was locked into the mask and he/she had to wear it for several days.
