Round Head Steel Rivets 4x6 mm, Pack of 100

They are the unsung heroes of every suit of historical armour, every leather bag, and every sturdy shield. These small but immensely important steel rivets with a round head are the fundamental fastening material for every armourer, craftsman, and re-enactor. Whether you are repairing your plate armour, crafting leather accessories, or building medieval furniture, you can't do without quality rivets. They are made from soft mild steel, which is ideal for cold setting – it is malleable enough to form a strong second head, yet tough enough to hold the joint securely. This practical pack of 100 should be a staple in any workshop. Further product information ...

Round Head Steel Rivets 4x6 mm, Pack of 100

Essential Supplies for Every Craftsman

Thanks to their classic look and reliable properties, these rivets are universally applicable for a wide range of projects:

  • Armour Making & Repair: Joining the individual plates of helmets, cuirasses, gauntlets, and other pieces of armour.
  • Leatherworking: Attaching buckles, fittings, and straps to belts, bags, quivers, and shoes.
  • Shield Construction: Fastening the central boss (umbo), rim, and handle to the wooden body of the shield.
  • Historical Hardware: Assembling hinges, locks, and fittings on chests and other period items.

How to Set Rivets Correctly (Cold Setting)

Creating a strong riveted joint requires the right technique. Here is a simple guide:

  1. Prepare the Hole: In the materials to be joined, drill or punch a hole that is only slightly larger than the rivet shank's diameter.
  2. Insert the Rivet: Push the rivet through the hole. Its factory head must sit flush against the material.
  3. Support the Head: Place the rivet's factory head on a solid surface, ideally in a riveting tool or a hole in an anvil, to prevent it from deforming during peening.
  4. Trim the Shank: The rivet shank should protrude on the other side by a length equal to about 1 to 1.5 times its diameter (approx. 4-6 mm). Trim it with bolt cutters or a hacksaw.
  5. Form the Shop Head: Using a ball-peen hammer, begin to carefully peen the end of the shank. Use circular strikes, working from the edges towards the centre, until you have formed a second, neat dome head.

Care and Maintenance

As the rivets are made of steel, they can be prone to rust. To protect them, store them in a dry place. After handling, you can wipe them with a lightly oiled cloth. Over time, they will develop a natural patina that adds an authentic look to your creations.
