Flint Arrowhead, Neolithic Style, 6.6 cm

Authentic Craftsmanship

This point is made from flint (or a similar siliceous stone like chert or jasper) and is crafted using flintknapping techniques. This ancient method creates the characteristic sharp edges and conchoidal fractures that were essential for prehistoric tools. Each piece is a handmade original, and therefore may vary slightly in shape, hue, and texture from the photograph. The reddish-brown colour is very common for this type of stone.

How to Attach (Hafting) the Point

How did a piece of stone become a deadly tool? The point was attached (hafted) to a wooden arrow shaft. The corner notches at the base of the point were crucial for this. They allowed the point to be tightly bound to the shaft using animal sinew or strong plant fibres (like nettle or bast fibre). To create a perfect, solid bond, the joint was often sealed with birch tar or another natural resin. This allows you to try crafting a complete replica of a Neolithic arrow yourself.

Historical Context: The Steel of the Stone Age

Flint was an absolutely critical material for prehistoric people – it was the "steel of the Stone Age." Why? Its hardness and ability to create an incredibly sharp edge (sharper than a modern surgical scalpel) made it ideal for toolmaking. It wasn't just used for arrowheads and spear points for hunting, but also for knives, scrapers for processing hides, drills, and even as a firestarter (flint and pyrite).

Important Warning and Care

  • WARNING: Although this is a replica, it is made using traditional techniques and its edges are extremely sharp! This is not a toy. Handle with extreme caution to avoid serious injury.
  • Brittleness: Flint is hard but brittle. Protect the point from being dropped on a hard surface (stone, tile), as it could easily chip or shatter.
  • Uniqueness: Each piece is a hand-knapped original. Expect slight variations in shape, colour, and exact dimensions from the illustrative photographs.
