Dendritic Flint Arrowhead, Leaf Shape, 6 cm

Art in Stone

This point is made from flint (or a similar siliceous stone like chert or jasper) featuring unique dendritic inclusions. These natural patterns are not fossils, but crystalline formations of manganese oxide that grow through the stone, creating unrepeatable images. Each point is hand-knapped using techniques that replicate ancient methods, ensuring the characteristic sharp edges and conchoidal fractures.

How to Haft the Point

Leaf-shaped points like this were typically attached (hafted) to an arrow shaft by setting them into a shallow notch at the end of the wooden shaft. They were then tightly wrapped with animal sinew or strong plant fibre. For maximum strength and impact resistance, the entire joint was often sealed with hot birch tar or another natural resin, which created an incredibly strong bond once hardened.

Historical Context: The Leaf Point

Simple leaf-shaped points are among the oldest and most widespread types of stone tools. Their production was relatively easier than that of notched points but still required immense skill and knowledge of the material. This universal and effective design was used for thousands of years, from the Palaeolithic (Old Stone Age) to the Neolithic, and served for both hunting (arrowheads) and as the points for lighter spears.

Important Warning and Care

  • WARNING: Although this is a replica, it is made using traditional knapping techniques and its edges are extremely sharp! This is not a toy. Handle with extreme caution to avoid serious injury.
  • Brittleness: Flint is hard but brittle. Protect the point from being dropped on a hard surface (stone, tile), as it could easily chip or shatter.
  • Uniqueness: Each piece is a hand-knapped original. Expect slight variations in shape, colour, and exact dimensions, and especially in the unique dendritic patterning.
