Smart Construction for the Modern Re-enactor
The core of this armour consists of hundreds of steel lamellae, approximately 20 gauge (0.9mm) thick, overlapping each other. This design has a huge advantage: it disperses impact energy excellently while allowing you to bend and move much better than in a solid cuirass. The plates are laced not with ordinary leather, which can rot and snap over time, but with extremely durable Paracord. This is hidden from view to maintain the historical aesthetic but ensures your armour won't fall apart in the heat of battle.
The set includes matching lamellar pauldrons (shoulder guards) to protect your joints. The entire torso is secured using a system of sturdy leather straps with brass buckles on the back. This makes the armour highly adjustable—you can tighten or loosen it depending on how thick your gambeson is underneath.
Historical Context: Birka and Eastern Influence
This armour draws inspiration from archaeological finds at the major trading hub of Birka (modern-day Sweden), which served as a gateway between the North and the East in the 9th and 10th centuries. Lamellar armour likely reached the North through contacts with Byzantium (where Varangians served) or via nomadic tribes from the Eastern steppes, such as the Khazars. Owning such armour was a sign of great wealth and a warrior's extensive travels.

Care and Maintenance
- Rust Protection: The steel lamellae must be protected from moisture. Wipe the armour dry after every use and apply a light coat of oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil).
- Check the Lacing: Although Paracord is very tough, regularly check the knots and bindings, especially in high-stress areas.
- Storage: Store in a dry place, ideally on a stand, to allow the armour to hold its shape and air out.
Disclaimer: While this armour is robust, it is a replica intended for stage combat, LARP, and historical re-enactment (Class C weapons). The steel thickness (approx. 20 gauge) may not be sufficient for full-contact heavy combat like Buhurt or Battle of the Nations without the risk of plate deformation or injury.
