Medieval Padded Arming Coif – Black Cotton Helmet Liner

Detailed Description and Features

This padded arming hood is designed to serve as a cushioning layer under metal armor. It is constructed with two layers: the outer shell is made of tough black cotton canvas, while the inner lining features soft cotton for comfort against the skin. Sandwiched between these layers is padding (approx. 320 gsm) made from a blend of wool, cotton, and polyester. This mix provides better breathability and sweat management than purely synthetic fillers.

The vertical quilting keeps the padding securely in place, preventing it from bunching up. The coif is equipped with sturdy chin ties to keep it firmly secured during combat. It is ideal for wearing under great helms, sallets, basinets, or beneath chainmail, where it prevents painful hair pulling and pressure points.

Historical Context

During the 13th and 14th centuries, the arming coif was a standard piece of military equipment. It was worn by knights under heavy helmets and by common foot soldiers alike, for whom it was often (along with a gambeson) the only head protection available. Its primary purpose was to absorb the kinetic energy of a blow which, while unable to penetrate the steel helmet, could still cause concussions or trauma without adequate shock absorption.

Care and Maintenance

To keep your arming coif fresh and functional for as long as possible, please follow these guidelines:

  • Washing: We recommend hand washing or machine washing on a gentle cycle with cold water. Use mild detergent.
  • Bleaching: Never use bleach, as it will damage both the fibers and the color.
  • Drying: Do not tumble dry. Line dry in the shade to prevent color fading from direct sunlight. Ensuring the padding dries completely is key to preventing odors.
  • Airing: Air out the coif thoroughly after every training session or battle.

Recommended Accessories: This arming hood is the perfect base layer for a chainmail coif or any historical helmet from our collection.
