Historical Context and Purpose

Double buckles, frequently referred to as spectacle buckles due to their shape, became highly prominent and widely used during the late Middle Ages. Their ingenious design offers a significant structural advantage: they eliminate the need for a separate strap keeper (leather loop) on the belt. The loose end of the strap simply tucks neatly and securely under the second loop of the metal frame. The fluted or ribbed decoration on the outer edges was a highly favoured motif of the period. It demonstrated the buckle-maker's skill and added a desirable touch of elegance and status to an everyday utilitarian item.

How to Use and Install

This buckle set is incredibly versatile, making it ideal for crafting narrow leather belts, sturdy bag straps, quiver harnesses, or securing pieces of plate and padded armour. The inner frame width is specifically designed to accommodate leather or fabric straps up to 14 mm (approx. 0.55 in) wide. Attaching the buckle to your strap is a straightforward process. Simply skive (thin down) the end of your leather strap, cut a small longitudinal slot for the movable pin to pass through, fold the leather over the central bar of the buckle, and secure it. You can achieve this historically by stitching the leather firmly together with waxed linen thread, or for a quicker solution, by using a solid saddler's rivet.

Care Instructions for Pure Brass

Cast from pure brass, these buckles will naturally react with moisture in the air and develop a rich, dark, and historically accurate patina over time. However, if your specific character portrayal requires maintaining a bright, golden shine, you can simply buff the buckles occasionally with a soft cloth and a gentle metal polishing compound or wadding. Always ensure you keep the metal away from harsh corrosive acids and strong solvents to prevent pitting.
