Late Medieval Brass Double-Oval Buckle with Grooved Notches
History and Origins of Double-Oval Buckles
The historical design of this buckle is based on abundant archaeological finds dating from the second half of the 14th century through the first half of the 15th century (approx. 1350–1450). Double-oval buckles (frequently termed spectacle buckles) were among the most widely used fasteners across Europe throughout the High and Late Middle Ages.
These buckles served a wide range of practical purposes. They were used on civilian and military waist belts worn over tunics, doublets, and gambesons, secured pouches and scabbards, and formed a crucial component of armor harnesses—holding pauldrons, leg harness, and helmet chin straps securely in place. The grooved decorative notches along the outer frame added visual prestige to the wearer's gear.
Mounting Instructions for Leather Straps
Attaching this buckle to a leather strap is straightforward and easy to accomplish in your workshop:
- Prepare the strap: Choose a leather strap up to 28 mm (approx. 1.10 in) wide. Punch a longitudinal slot near the end for the buckle pin.
- Position the pin: Feed the buckle pin through the punched slot so it rests freely on the central bar between the raised knops.
- Secure the strap: Fold the leather end back around the central bar and fasten it securely with heavy stitching, rivets, or a brass strap mount.
- Fastening: Thread the strap tip through the first loop, push the pin through the hole in the leather, and feed the strap through the second loop.

Care and Safety Instructions
Cast brass is a very durable metal requiring minimal maintenance. To keep your buckle looking its best, follow these guidelines:
- Wipe dry with a cotton cloth after exposure to rain or moisture.
- Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes, as they can remove the dark antiqued patina highlighting the grooved details.
- The pin point is functional – handle with care during assembly and wear to avoid scratching leather or skin.
- Do not subject the buckle or pin to excessive bending forces.
- Keep out of reach of small children due to small parts.
