History and Origins of Trefoil Double-Oval Buckles

The historical design of this buckle is based on archaeological finds dated between 1400 and 1500 (Late Middle Ages). During the 15th century, foundry artwork for dress accessories reached a pinnacle of craftsmanship—simple oval shapes were superseded by complex organic and architectural contours inspired by Gothic tracery.

Double-loop buckles with central pin bars and trefoil lobe profiling (frequently termed trefoil double-oval buckles or spectacle buckles) were highly favored across Western and Central Europe throughout the 15th century. Historically, buckles of this style fastened noble and patrician waist belts approximately 32 mm (approx. 1.25 in) wide worn over tailored doublets, gowns, or light armor. The engraved leaf knops in the lobed recesses provided decorative flair while strengthening the frame structure and creating a firm resting seat for the buckle pin.

Mounting and Assembly Instructions

Attaching this Late Gothic double-loop buckle to a leather strap is straightforward and easy to accomplish in your workshop:

• Prepare the Leather: Select a leather strap up to 32.20 mm (approx. 1.26 in) wide (ideally 30 to 32 mm / 1.18 to 1.25 in). Punch a longitudinal slot near the end of the strap for the buckle pin.
• Position the Pin: Feed the buckle pin through the punched slot so it sits freely on the central crossbar.
• Secure the Strap: Fold the leather end back around the central crossbar and secure it tightly with heavy waxed thread, brass rivets, or a metal strap mount.
• Fastening: Thread the strap tip through the first loop, insert the pin through the desired hole in the leather, and feed the strap through the second loop so the pin rests against the engraved outer notch.

• The pin point is functional – handle with care during assembly and wear to avoid scratching leather or skin.
• Do not subject the buckle or pin to extreme bending forces.
• Keep out of reach of small children due to small parts.
