History and Origins of Trapezoidal Three-Lobed Buckles

The historical design of this buckle is based on archaeological finds dated between 1250 and 1400, spanning the High to Late Middle Ages (Gothic period). Buckles with a slightly expanding frame and three decorative lobes were a hallmark of medieval metalwork throughout Western and Central Europe during the 13th and 14th centuries.

Historically, buckles of this style fastened leather straps approximately 20–21 mm (approx. 0.78 to 0.82 in) wide. They were fitted onto dress belts worn over Gothic tunics (cottes) and doublets, secured pouches and dagger sheaths, and formed a vital component of armor harnesses—fastening helmet chin straps (such as on bascinets or kettle hats) and leg harness straps. The three spherical lobes provided decorative flair while creating a secure resting seat for the buckle pin.

Mounting and Assembly Instructions

Attaching this Gothic buckle to a leather strap is straightforward and easy to accomplish in your workshop:

• Prepare the Leather: Select a leather strap up to 21.70 mm (approx. 0.85 in) wide (ideally 20 to 21 mm). Punch a longitudinal slot near the end of the strap for the buckle pin.
• Position the Pin: Feed the buckle pin through the punched slot so it sits freely on the narrow crossbar.
• Secure the Strap: Fold the leather end back around the crossbar and secure it tightly with heavy waxed thread, brass rivets, or a metal strap mount.
• Fastening: Thread the strap tip through the buckle frame, insert the pin through the desired hole in the leather, and tighten so the pin rests between the lobes on the front edge.

• The pin point is functional – handle with care during assembly and wear to avoid scratching leather or skin.
• Do not subject the buckle or pin to extreme bending forces.
• Keep out of reach of small children due to small parts.
