Gothic Brass Oval Double-Loop Belt Buckle

History and Origins of Oval Double-Loop Buckles

The historical design of this buckle is based on abundant archaeological finds dated between the 14th and 15th centuries (approx. 1350 to 1480), spanning the High and Late Middle Ages. Oval double-loop buckles featuring a central bar (frequently termed spectacle buckles or double-oval buckles) were immensely popular across Europe during this period.

Historically, these buckles fulfilled a wide variety of practical and ceremonial functions. They were fitted onto medium and wide waist belts worn over tunics, doublets, and gambesons, secured pouches and scabbards, and formed a vital component of armor harnesses—holding pauldrons, leg harness, and cuirass straps securely. The central bar construction ensured that leather straps remained centered without twisting under heavy loads.

Mounting and Assembly Instructions

Attaching this Gothic buckle to a leather strap is straightforward and easy to accomplish in your workshop:

  • Prepare the Leather: Select a leather strap up to 34 mm (approx. 1.33 in) wide. Punch a longitudinal slot near the end of the strap for the buckle pin.
  • Position the Pin: Feed the buckle pin through the punched slot so it sits freely on the central bar.
  • Secure the Strap: Fold the leather end back around the central bar and secure it tightly with heavy waxed thread, brass rivets, or a metal strap mount.
  • Fastening: Pass the belt tip through the first loop, insert the pin through the desired hole in the leather, and feed the strap through the second loop.

Care and Safety Instructions

Cast brass is a very durable metal requiring minimal care. To keep your buckle looking its best, observe these simple guidelines:

  • Wipe dry with a soft cotton cloth after exposure to rain, moisture, or sweat.
  • Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishing pastes, which could strip away the dark antiqued patina that highlights the frame contours.
  • The pin point is functional – handle with care during assembly and wear to avoid scratching leather or skin.
  • Do not subject the buckle or pin to extreme bending forces.
  • Keep out of reach of small children due to small parts.

Recommended Accessories

We recommend pairing this buckle with a 30–34 mm (approx. 1.25 to 1.33 in) wide blank leather strap from our store, a matching 14th or 15th-century Gothic brass strap end (chape), and brass belt rivets. It is ideal for belts worn over medieval tunics, gambesons, doublets, or knightly armor harnesses.
