Roman Leather Baldric (Balteus) for the Gladius Sword

How to Use the Baldric Correctly

This type of sword hanger is traditionally worn over the shoulder, not around the waist. Thanks to its generous length, you can comfortably wear it over your tunic and armour. Its main charm lies in its functionality and simplicity:

  1. At the end of the baldric, you will find two shorter leather straps.
  2. Each strap is fitted with a screw-on brass saddler's rivet.
  3. Simply unscrew the rivets, pass the straps through the metal rings on your sword's scabbard (the vagina), and securely screw the rivets back on.
  4. This ensures your Gladius is hung firmly and securely, always ready for use.

This system guarantees that the sword stays in place even during rapid movement, running, or in the heat of battle.

The Balteus in the Roman Army

While the cingulum militare belt was more a symbol of military status, the balteus served a purely practical function – carrying the sword. In the early Imperial period, legionaries wore their Gladius high on their right hip, even if they were right-handed. The reason was simple: a sword on the right side did not interfere with handling the large shield, or scutum, which they held in their left hand. In contrast, centurions, as commanders, wore their swords on the left side to distinguish themselves. This baldric allows you to carry your sword precisely according to these historical customs.

Leather Care

As this is a product made from genuine leather, it requires proper care to ensure its longevity. Protect the baldric from moisture and prolonged exposure to water. If it gets dirty, clean it only with a soft cloth, perhaps slightly dampened with soapy water. Never soak the leather and allow it to air dry at room temperature after cleaning. Occasionally, you can treat it with a leather care product (grease or oil) to maintain its suppleness.
