They were made from various materials, most commonly hardened leather (known as cuir bouilli) or later from metal as part of a suit of plate armour. Archers also wore a specific type of bracer on their inner forearm to protect it from the sting of the bowstring upon release.

The word "vambrace" comes from the Old French term avant-bras, which literally means "before the arm" or "forearm." The term came into use in the 13th century as arm protection began to evolve from simple mail sleeves to more complex, articulated plate components.
