Historical Context: Why Did Knights Wear a Surcoat?

The surcoat appeared in European warfare during the 12th century, primarily in connection with the Crusades. It served two vital purposes. First, it provided sun protection—metal armour would heat up to unbearable temperatures in the Palestinian sun, and the surcoat acted as effective insulation. Second, it was used for identification. In the chaos of battle, where helmets hid faces, the colourful symbol was the only way to distinguish friend from foe. The Teutonic Order, founded around 1190, adopted the white garment with a black cross as their signature heraldry.

Care and Safety Instructions

To keep the tabard looking as good as new, we recommend a machine wash at 40°C (104°F) on a delicate cycle. This product is not suitable for tumble drying. Iron at a medium temperature, ideally from the inside out to protect the cross appliqué.

Warning: Only the tabard itself is included in the delivery. Other accessories shown in the photos, such as belts, tunics, trousers, or weapons, are not included. This garment is not protective armour. Never allow a child to handle sharp weapons without supervision.

We recommend pairing this tabard with a simple leather belt and a wooden sword to give your young knight a truly legendary look.
