17th Century Rapier with Brass Swept Hilt

The Elegant Weapon of Gentlemen and Duellists

This rapier is a replica of the weapons that defined personal combat in the 17th century. In this era, fencing evolved into a sophisticated art, and the rapier was its primary instrument. The intricate brass swept-hilt is not just an aesthetic feature; its loops and bars were designed to catch and deflect an opponent's blade, protecting the fencer's unarmoured hand. It was the preferred weapon of noblemen, duellists, and soldiers off the battlefield, as we know them from tales like The Three Musketeers.

The carbon steel blade is relatively wide (3 cm at the hilt) and robust, giving it good durability. The wire-wrapped grip ensures the sword won't slip from your hand, whether during practice or as part of a costume at an event. Thanks to its length and design, this rapier is ideal for costumes from the Thirty Years' War period, for characters like Spanish noblemen, musketeers, or for LARP and re-enactment where a full-contact weapon is not required. It also serves wonderfully as a decoration with a historical touch.

Sword Care

The blade of this rapier is made of carbon steel, which is prone to rust. To keep the blade clean and rust-free, it must be wiped with a dry cloth after each use and regularly **preserved with oil** (e.g., Ballistol or WD-40). The brass parts (hilt and pommel) may develop a patina over time. If you prefer a shiny look, you can easily polish them with a brass cleaning agent. Store the sword in a dry place. Do not leave it in a damp scabbard (if you purchase one); leather and wood can absorb moisture and cause the blade to rust.
