Knightly Templar Great Helm With Brass Cross And Feathers
History And Origin Of The Great Helm
The great helm, also known as a pot helm, bucket helm, or barrel helm, represented a revolution in head protection during the late 12th and 13th centuries. It was developed to provide maximum protection for the face and neck, which older designs like the Norman nasal helm could not offer. In its simplest form, it was a flat-topped steel cylinder that completely covered the head, featuring only narrow eye slits and small ventilation holes. An interesting historical fact is that in Spain, these helmets were called the Yelmo de Zaragoza because they were first introduced to the Iberian Peninsula in Zaragoza.
Practical Use And Safety
This Templar helmet is primarily intended as a high-quality decoration, an accessory for LARP, cosplay, or light historical reenactment. Please note that this is not protective armour suitable for full-contact combat, such as buhurt, Battle of the Nations (HMB), or similar heavy-hitting disciplines. The helmet could be damaged by heavy blows and does not provide adequate certified protection for these extreme sports. If you plan to wear it to events, we highly recommend acquiring a suitable base layer. A thickly padded arming cap combined with a chainmail coif is ideal, exactly as medieval knights would have worn it.
Care For Steel Armour
To ensure your helmet lasts a long time and keeps looking brand new, proper care is essential. Because it is made of steel, it is susceptible to rust, especially after contact with moisture or sweat. We recommend wiping the surface with a dry cloth after each use and lightly oiling it with a suitable gun or armour oil. Avoid using aggressive cleaning agents or coarse brushes that could scratch the surface or damage the brass cross.
