Historical Context: Who was El Gran Capitán?
Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba (1453–1515) was a military genius who served the Catholic Monarchs Isabella and Ferdinand. He became famous during the Conquest of Granada and later in the Italian Wars. He is considered the "father of trench warfare" and the creator of the modern army. He formed the foundations of the invincible Spanish infantry (later the Tercios), which dominated European battlefields for two centuries. His victory at the Battle of Cerignola (1503) is a historical milestone – it was the first battle in history won by gunpowder small arms.
Usage and Safety Warning
Although the sword looks robust, please bear in mind that it is an exclusively decorative item.
- Intended Use: As a luxury wall decoration, an accessory for a historical costume (without contact combat), or a collector's artifact.
- What to Avoid: Never strike objects with the sword or fence with another person. The tang construction inside the handle is not designed for impact, and doing so could damage the sword or cause injury.
How to Care for Your Sword
To ensure this Toledo masterpiece brings you joy for many years:
- Do not touch the blade with bare hands. Human sweat is acidic and can leave marks even on stainless steel. If this happens, wipe the blade immediately with a dry cloth.
- Occasionally treat the metal parts with preserving oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil).
- Do not expose the sword to damp environments.
For a perfect presentation, we recommend hanging the sword on a wooden plaque or a horizontal stand, which will highlight its beauty.
