15th Century Gothic Breastplate | Knight's Plate Armour

Detailed Armour Description

This breastplate is masterfully crafted from sturdy 1.6 mm (16 gauge) mild steel, ensuring excellent durability. Its design is not just for show—it's functional.

Construction and Features

  • Articulated Design: The armour consists of a main chest piece and a lower, slightly articulated plate (a plackart), connected by rivets. This construction protects the torso while allowing for natural movement and bending at the waist.
  • Gothic Styling: The distinctive ridges (fluting) and elegant curves not only look great but historically served to deflect blows. The flared edges at the armholes provide additional protection.
  • Strapping System: The breastplate is secured with robust, crisscrossed straps of genuine leather on the back. Adjustable steel buckles allow you to achieve a perfect fit over your gambeson.
  • Finish Options: Choose the version that best suits your character—polished steel for a nobleman, or a blackened finish for a mercenary or dark knight. The inside is coated with black paint to prevent corrosion.

Where Can You Use This Breastplate?

Its versatility makes it a perfect choice for:

  • LARP and Reenactment: It provides core body protection while looking absolutely fantastic.
  • Theatre and Film: Its historical accuracy will lend authenticity to your role.
  • Costumes and Cosplay: An ideal foundation for a knight, mercenary, or fantasy warrior costume.
  • Collection and Decoration: Hang it on your wall to give your space a touch of medieval atmosphere.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This breastplate is a robust replica, but it is not certified as personal protective equipment. It is not intended for full-contact combat sports like HMB, buhurt, or the Battle of the Nations.

The Breastplate in History

15th-century Gothic armour is considered the apex of European plate-making. However, very few could afford a full suit of armour. For foot soldiers, archers, pikemen, or mercenaries, a standalone breastplate was the ideal compromise. It provided vital protection for the torso against arrows and slashes but was significantly lighter and cheaper than a full suit, and it didn't restrict movement.

A Fun Fact From History

Did you know that the price of a custom-made suit of Gothic armour could equal that of a town house or a small farm? Armour was so valuable that it was often passed down as an heirloom and used as ransom if a knight was captured.

Caring for Your New Armour

To keep your breastplate looking great for years, proper care is essential. Wipe it dry after each use. Regularly treat it with a thin layer of preservation oil (like Ballistol) to prevent rust. Keep the leather straps supple with beeswax or another leather conditioner. A quality product by Lord of Battles®.
