Early Medieval Brass Belt Strap End with Celtic Knotwork Cross

Historical Context and Art Style

Metal strap ends (often simply referred to as belt fittings in archaeology) were a fundamental part of early and high medieval equipment. During the period from the 9th to the 12th century, when Vikings and Normans traversed Europe, belts served not only a practical purpose but were a clear indicator of social status. Richly decorated knotwork patterns, known as interlacing, are a typical feature of Insular Celtic art and the Norse animal style. Similar motifs of knotwork crosses were frequently used for their symbolism of eternity and protection against evil forces. This product is designed to ideally fit into reenactment gear for the early medieval period, the Viking Age, or the Romanesque era.

How to Attach and Use the Strap End Correctly

Attaching this fitting requires basic crafting skills, but the result is well worth the effort. The strap end is primarily designed for sturdy leather belts with a width approaching 31 mm (approx. 1.22 inches). There are five pre-cast holes with a diameter of 4.5 mm (approx. 0.18 inches) in the body of the fitting. The end of your leather strap must be trimmed to a shape that matches the internal lines of the fitting. Following this, the strap end is riveted to the leather. For installation, we recommend using solid or tubular brass rivets, which will visually blend with the material. Always carefully punch holes in the leather with a hole punch before riveting; never force the rivets through unpunched leather to prevent the metal from cracking.

Caring for Brass Fittings

To ensure this product serves you as long as possible and retains its beautiful appearance, it is important to follow a few basic maintenance rules. Brass naturally oxidises and acquires a darker patina over time. If you prefer the bright shine of the raised relief parts, simply polish the surface gently with a dry cloth and a drop of non-ferrous metal polish occasionally. Avoid using coarse brushes or aggressive chemicals, which could remove the intentionally created black patina in the recesses of the pattern. If the belt gets wet, carefully dry both the fitting and the leather at room temperature after returning from your event.

Safety and Recommended Accessories

This is a solid metal object with rounded but firm edges. When handling your belt, be careful not to strike anyone with the strap end during quick unfastening or whilst engaged in historical fencing. Do not use the strap end for purposes other than those intended, such as a prying tool, as there is a risk of irreversibly bending or breaking it. To complete your historical belt, we recommend purchasing high-quality belt leather of the appropriate width, a historically accurate brass buckle in the same art style, and a set of connecting rivets for a secure assembly.
