Baroque Cast Brass Baldric Buckle for Wide Leather Belts
Historical Context and Artistic Style
The design of this buckle corresponds to the morphology of the Early to High Baroque period (roughly the years 1600 to 1700). In this turbulent time, influenced by protracted conflicts, soldiers, mercenaries, and noblemen carried heavy sidearms, typically swords and rapiers. To carry them, a baldric was used – a wide leather belt worn diagonally across the shoulder. To adjust the length of the baldric and to support the weight of the weapon, massive double-frame buckles exactly like this one were utilised. The gentle scalloped decoration of the frame edges is a typical element of Baroque ornamentation, which was also evident on everyday objects.
Instructions for Use and Attachment to a Belt
The buckle is designed to accommodate leather straps with a maximum width of 48 mm (1.89 inches). The attachment method is based on traditional leatherworking techniques. The end of the leather strap must be cut longitudinally in the centre to create space for the movable prong. The strap is then passed over the central bar of the buckle, the prong is inserted into the prepared slot, and the leather is folded back onto itself. For a firm and safe connection, this fold must be secured with leathercraft rivets or tightly stitched using strong linen or waxed thread. The other end of the strap is provided with a series of punched holes for fastening.

Caring for Brass Accessories
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, which tends to naturally oxidise in the air, creating a so-called patina. If you prefer an aged, historically worn appearance, the buckle requires almost no maintenance. However, if you wish to maintain a brilliant golden shine, it is recommended to occasionally polish the buckle with a soft cloth and a specialised cleaning paste designed for brass and copper. Avoid prolonged contact with aggressive chemicals and excessive moisture to prevent the formation of green verdigris, which could potentially stain the adjacent leather strap or your clothing.
Recommended Accessories
To complement this massive buckle, we recommend purchasing a high-quality blank leather strap with a width of up to 4.5 cm (1.77 inches) and a set of solid brass rivets for easy and secure attachment. For a complete musketeer appearance, acquiring a leather rapier frog that slides onto the baldric is also highly advisable.
