Angled Leather Frog for Rapier and Smallsword
Well-Designed and Durable Construction
This sword frog is crafted from robust buff leather, approximately 3 mm thick, which guarantees a long lifespan. The base is a leather triangle to which all loops are fastened with nickel-plated steel rivets. The three upper loops are used to attach it to a belt up to 6 cm (2.36 inches) wide. The three lower, slanted loops firmly embrace your weapon's scabbard, ensuring it hangs stably at an optimal angle that facilitates both movement and the draw itself.
Who Is It For and Where Does It Fit?
This type of frog is historically accurate for the Renaissance and Baroque periods, when rapiers and smallswords were at the height of their popularity. It is an essential accessory for characters such as:
- The Three Musketeers: Complete your d'Artagnan or Porthos costume with this stylish hanger.
- Renaissance Nobleman: Show your status and readiness to defend your honour with a rapier proudly at your side.
- Duelist and Fencer: Ideal for historical fencing (HEMA), theatrical performances, and LARP battles.
- Fantasy Adventurer: Also works great for elves, rogues, or other agile characters who favour lighter swords.
The Rapier Frog Through Time
In the 16th and 17th centuries, the rapier became the primary civilian sidearm for self-defence and duelling. Its significant length, however, required a specific method of carry. Frogs that held the sword at an angle were absolutely crucial. They not only prevented the long blade from getting tangled in the legs but also allowed for a swift and elegant draw, which could be the difference between life and death in a duel. This design is therefore not merely aesthetic but stems from the purely practical needs of fencers of that era.
Fun Fact: More Than Just a Weapon
The rapier was not just a tool of combat but also an important fashion accessory and a symbol of social status. The complexity and ornamentation of its hilt often reflected the wealth and taste of its owner. A high-quality, well-fitting frog was therefore just as important as the weapon itself, as it completed the overall impression of a gentleman.
Caring for Your Leather Frog
To keep your frog looking great for many seasons, just follow a few simple rules. Protect the leather from prolonged exposure to water. If it gets wet, let it air dry at room temperature. Never dry the leather on a heater. To maintain its suppleness, you can occasionally treat the material with a leather balm or wax. Simply wipe the steel rivets with a dry cloth to maintain their shine.
