Robert the Bruce Sword – The Heart of Scotland – Circa 1300

A Weapon Worthy of a King

Typologically, this sword corresponds to weapons from the High Middle Ages (resembling Oakeshott Type XII). The blade is hand-forged from high-quality 1065 high carbon steel. Its wide fuller reduces weight and shifts the center of gravity closer to the guard, allowing for surprisingly good handling despite the weapon's massive appearance.

The design is steeped in Scottish symbolism:

  • Pommel: The disk pommel features an enamelled Cross of St. Andrew (the patron saint of Scotland), clearly declaring the bearer's allegiance.
  • Hilt: The wooden core is wrapped in soft black leather and reinforced with twisted silver wire. The grip length allows for hand-and-a-half use if needed.
  • Scabbard: Included is a luxurious scabbard made of thick black leather. The throat features a silver-plated relief of the Lion of Scotland (Lion Rampant). An integrated leather belt is part of the scabbard, so you can strap the sword to your waist immediately.

Usage and Safety Warning

Although the blade is made of functional steel and tempered, this specific model by Windlass Steelcrafts® is primarily classified as a collector's and decorative item.

  • Contact Fencing: The sword is not designed for blade-on-blade contact combat (reenactment battles, HEMA sparring). Striking against hard objects could damage the edge, which is not profiled for such abuse.
  • Drills: Thanks to its realistic weight and balance, the sword is suitable for solo drills, shadow fencing, or as a prop for theatrical performances, provided no hard blade contact occurs.
  • Edge: The blade is delivered unsharpened (with an edge thickness of approx. 0.85 mm) for safer handling. However, given the material (1065 steel), it can be professionally sharpened if desired.

Care Instructions

1065 steel is carbon steel, not stainless. This gives it excellent mechanical properties but requires maintenance. 1. Keep the sword dry. 2. Do not touch the blade with bare hands (sweat is corrosive). 3. Regularly preserve metal parts with oil (e.g., WD-40, Ballistol) or microcrystalline wax. 4. If not using the sword for a long time, remove it from the leather scabbard, as leather can trap moisture.
