19th Century Naval Cutlass Replica with Brass Cup Guard

For the Rigging and Below Deck

This type of weapon was a faithful companion to sailors in both the American and European navies during the 19th century. Its design is purely utilitarian. The blade is slightly curved, allowing for effective cuts in the confined spaces of a ship, where long swords or rapiers would get tangled in rigging and equipment. The massive brass cup guard (shell guard) protected the sailor's hand not only from an opponent's blade but also functioned as an improvised knuckle duster in the press of a boarding action.

The grip is wrapped in leather and reinforced with twisted brass wire, which historically ensured a firm hold even with wet or bloodied hands. Today, this detail adds authenticity and elegance to the replica. The blade is made of carbon steel and polished to a mirror finish. While it has an edge, for construction reasons, it is not intended for contact fencing.

Care and Safety

To ensure this cutlass brings you joy for years to come, you should care for it like a proper ship's armourer:

  • Rust Protection: The blade is made of carbon steel, which means it can be susceptible to corrosion. Therefore, treat it regularly with preservation oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil), especially if you have touched it with bare hands (sweat is aggressive).
  • Brass and Leather Care: You can polish the brass parts with metal polish to maintain their shine. Treat the leather on the grip and scabbard occasionally with beeswax or leather conditioner to prevent cracking.
  • Safety Warning: This cutlass is a decorative item. The hilt construction is not designed to withstand the impact of theatrical fencing or HEMA. Using it for such purposes risks loosening the blade and causing injury. Use it only as a costume prop or display piece.
