Renaissance Leather Baldric with Antique Brass Buckle | 15th–17th C. | Brown

Features and Adjustability

Crafted from thick genuine leather (approx. 3.6 mm), this baldric is built to last. The rich brown colour pairs perfectly with historical fabrics. The defining feature of this piece is its versatility. The sword frog is adjustable using a system of screw rivets (Chicago screws). With a simple screwdriver, you can widen or tighten the loops to perfectly grip your specific sword scabbard, preventing it from slipping or wobbling as you move. The massive antique-finish brass buckle isn't just decoration; it allows you to adjust the drop length of the sword to suit your height.

A Brief History

Baldrics rose to prominence during the 16th and 17th centuries. As swords evolved into longer Rapiers and heavier Basket-hilted Broadswords, wearing them on a simple waist belt became impractical and uncomfortable. The diagonal shoulder belt solved this, allowing the weight to be carried by the shoulder. This style became iconic during the Thirty Years' War and the Golden Age of Piracy, worn by everyone from the famous Musketeers to the buccaneers of the Caribbean.

Leather Care Instructions

To ensure this baldric serves you well on many campaigns:

  • Keep the leather conditioned with a quality leather balm or wax to prevent cracking and maintain flexibility.
  • Avoid storing it in damp conditions to prevent mould.
  • If it gets wet, let it air dry naturally away from direct heat sources.
