Hand-forged Triangular Arrowheads, Set of 3

History and Use

This simple triangular head is a type of flat blade (often called a "broadhead"). Unlike narrow armour-piercing heads (known as "bodkins"), which were designed to penetrate armour, this type was primarily intended to inflict wide, cutting wounds. This made it effective for hunting (where it caused rapid bleeding) and in combat against unarmoured or lightly protected targets. Its relatively simple production made it a commonly available and widely used type of arrowhead for many centuries.

Mounting and Maintenance

Attaching the Head

This arrowhead features a socket (a hollow receptacle) for mounting onto a wooden arrow shaft.

  1. Taper the end of the shaft so it fits snugly into the socket. You can shape it into a slight cone for a perfect fit.
  2. For a permanent and strong connection, we recommend gluing the head, for example, with modern epoxy glue. Historically, pine resin glue would have been used.
  3. Once inserted, the joint was also sometimes secured with a wrapping of thin cord or sinew just below the socket.

Product Care

As the heads are made from mild steel, they are susceptible to rust, just like their historical counterparts.

  • After each use, especially in damp conditions, dry the heads carefully.
  • To protect against rust, regularly wipe them with a cloth lightly soaked in oil (e.g., machine oil, WD-40, or conservation wax).
  • Store your arrows in a dry environment.

Practical Use and Warning

These heads are functional replicas. However, remember that even historical arrowheads were not indestructible. If you intend to use them repeatedly, we recommend shooting at a target that can safely stop the arrow without damaging it (e.g., a straw bale, special foam targets).

Strong Warning: Impact on a hard object, such as a stone, metal, or a hard knot in wood, will almost certainly damage the steel head (bend, break, or dull it). This is a natural property of the material, not a product defect. Exercise caution when handling and shooting; this is not a toy.
