Fantasy Knight Pauldrons with Blade Breakers | Shoulder Armor for LARP
Detailed Armour Description
This pair of pauldrons is crafted with an emphasis on functionality and a striking appearance. They are surprisingly lightweight, yet sturdy enough for the rigors of LARP and historical events.
Construction and Components
- Blade Breakers (Haute-pieces): The dominant feature of the armour. These high plates guard the sides of the neck and the collarbones, giving you an unmistakable silhouette.
- Articulated Lames: Attached to the main shoulder cop are three articulated plates (lames) that protect the upper arm. This segmented design ensures your movement is not restricted during combat.
- Material and Finish: The pauldrons are handcrafted from 18 gauge (1 mm) mild steel with a polished finish. The interior is coated with black paint for rust prevention.
How to Wear These Pauldrons: Important Note!
To properly and securely fasten these pauldrons, you will need a gorget or a cuirass that is equipped with attachment points (such as D-rings or leather tabs). The pauldrons are attached as follows:
- The top leather strap and buckle is fastened to the mounting point on your gorget or cuirass.
- The lower leather strap is buckled around your upper arm (bicep).
The gorget, cuirass, and gambeson shown in the photos are not included! They must be purchased separately.

Blade Breakers in History
Although these pauldrons are stylized for fantasy, their concept is rooted in real history. High neck guards, known as "haute-pieces," appeared on plate armour in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. They were a direct response to increasingly effective weapons and combat techniques that targeted weak points in armour, such as the neck and shoulders. In both tournament and field armours, they represented the pinnacle of protection at the time.
A Fun Fact From History
Did you know that tournament armour was often asymmetrical? The left side, being more exposed to an opponent's lance, was often heavily reinforced and featured a massive blade breaker, while the right side was made lighter to allow for freer movement with a lance or sword.
How to Care for Your New Armour
Keep your armour shining and rust-free. After each use, wipe it dry. Occasionally, apply a light coat of preservation oil. Keep the leather straps dry and treat them with a leather conditioner from time to time. A quality product by Lord of Battles®.
