Knights Templar Surcoat with Cross | Crusader Over-Tunic for Reenactment

A Symbol of Faith and a Functional Piece of Kit

This surcoat is made according to historical examples of the garments worn by the Knights of the Temple over their armour.

Appearance and Material

The outer layer is made from a strong and durable cotton canvas in pure white, symbolizing purity and renunciation. The interior features a softer cotton lining for enhanced comfort during wear. Carefully appliquéd on the left side of the chest is the distinctive red cross pattée, the unmistakable symbol of the Templars. The surcoat is sleeveless and completely open on the sides, ensuring maximum freedom of movement in combat. Long splits in the front and back allow for comfortable horse riding.

Please Note: The belt, sword, and other accessories shown in the photos are not included with the product but can be purchased separately in our shop.

The History of the Templar Surcoat

A Garment of Deep Significance

The surcoat was worn by knights from the 12th century onwards, not only for identification on the battlefield but also for practical reasons—it protected their maille and plate armour from the scorching Middle Eastern sun, as well as from rain and dirt. For the Templars, the white mantle and surcoat held profound symbolic meaning.

A Fascinating Historical Fact

Did you know that the Templars originally wore simple white mantles only? The red cross, a symbol of martyrdom, was granted to them by Pope Eugene III in 1147 as a sign of special papal favour. This cross allowed them to stand out in the heat of battle and became a symbol of their resolve to lay down their lives for their faith.

Ideal for Many Occasions

This surcoat is an essential piece of equipment for:

  • Reenactment and Living History focusing on the Crusades era
  • LARP, for portraying a Templar, Crusader, or holy knight character
  • Theatrical and Film Productions with historical themes
  • Collectors and fans of the history of the Knights Templar
  • Themed Festivals and historical fairs

How to Care for Your Surcoat

To preserve its original appearance and extend its lifespan, we recommend the following:

  • Washing: Hand wash in cold water only to prevent shrinking and damage to the cross appliqué.
  • Drying: Do not tumble dry. Allow to air dry freely on a hanger.
  • Ironing: Iron on a low setting, ideally from the reverse side to avoid damaging the appliqué.

Measurements (One Size)

The surcoat is designed in a single size that fits most body types thanks to its open-sided construction.
