Set of 5 Iron Armor Buckles with Rivet Plate

How to Attach the Buckle Correctly

This type of buckle with an integrated plate serves as a fixed anchor point for a fastening strap. Installation is simple:

  1. Position the buckle's rivet plate where you want to attach it (e.g., on the edge of an armor plate, on a bag flap, etc.).
  2. Mark the position of the hole, then drill or punch a hole in your material (leather, metal).
  3. Insert a rivet (not included) through the hole in the buckle's plate and through your material.
  4. On the reverse side, peen the rivet using a hammer and an anvil or rivet setter.
  5. Tip: If you peen the rivet just enough to be secure, the buckle will be able to pivot freely. for a fixed, immovable position, peen the rivet tightly.

The buckle is now ready to receive a separate strap with holes for the pin.

Historical Use

Buckles with integrated rivet plates were an absolutely essential and ubiquitous piece of hardware on plate armor from the 14th century onward. They were used to attach the myriad of leather straps that held an entire suit of armor together—from affixing pauldrons to a gorget, connecting arm and leg components, to securing the inner lining. Their simple, strong, and efficient design was ideal for this purpose. Thanks to their universal D-shape and functional appearance, they are suitable for a wide range of historical periods and projects.
