Synthetic Double-Sided Combination Whetstone with 3000/8000 Grit

Instructions for Use and Sharpening Technique

This stone is designed for the final stage of sharpening. The side with 3000 grit is ideal for fine honing and refining the edge after using coarser stones (e.g., 1000 grit and lower). The side with 8000 grit is used to subsequently polish the blade to a mirror finish, achieving the maximum possible sharpness. Before sharpening, the stone must be submerged in water for 10 to 15 minutes so it can soak up the liquid. It can also be used with special honing oil. During the sharpening process, ensure you maintain a constant angle (typically 15-20 degrees depending on the knife type) and constantly and generously wet the surface of the stone with water to wash away fine metal swarf and prevent the pores of the stone from clogging.

A Brief History of Blade Sharpening

A perfectly sharp tool has been the foundation of survival and success since prehistoric times. Whilst medieval armourers and master swordsmiths relied on quarried natural stones, such as the famous Belgian Coticule or Japanese natural water stones, today we have synthetic stones at our disposal. These offer the immense advantage of an absolutely homogeneous grit without any undesirable flaws or hard inclusions that could unexpectedly damage the delicate edge of a historical replica or a modern knife.

Stone Maintenance and Safety Guidelines

To ensure the stone serves you reliably for a long time, allow it to dry slowly at room temperature after each use. Never dry it on a radiator or in direct sunlight, as it could crack. Protect it from falling onto hard surfaces, as it is fragile and could break. Exercise the utmost caution during the sharpening process itself. Move the blade smoothly and keep your fingers at a safe distance from the edge to prevent nasty cuts.
