Honing belts can be used with or without a cutting or polishing compound and are used after the finest level of sharpening to polish the edge and keep the edge smooth by working off any burrs left behind during the sharpening process. Strops are traditionally seen in barber shops for sharpening straight razors used for shaving as thin blades require frequent stropping to align the blade.
