History and Significance of the Iaito

In the history of Japanese swordsmanship, wooden swords (bokken) or blunt metal swords were often used for training. The modern Iaito emerged in post-war Japan as a safe alternative for the study of Iaido. The purpose of an Iaito is not combat but the cultivation of mind and body through precise movement. The name Iaito literally means "sword for drawing." Interestingly, the stainless steel variant has become incredibly popular in the West, where varying climates and the perspiration of practitioners often caused traditional carbon steel blades to rust quickly.

Care and Safety Guidelines

While the stainless steel blade is rust-resistant, we recommend wiping it with a dry cloth after every practice to remove perspiration. The synthetic leather wrap is virtually maintenance-free. Never attempt to perform cutting tests (tameshigiri) with this sword – the blade is not designed for such impact and could break or cause injury. Additionally, this sword must not be used for contact sparring.
