The fundamental rule in any LARP battle or reenactment combat is the safety of all participants. This padded arrow is engineered to minimize the risk of injury upon impact. The large safety head made of shock-absorbing foam has a diameter of approximately 55 mm (2.16 inches), securely preventing it from penetrating an eye socket. We strongly warn that the maximum permitted bow draw weight for public battles is strictly set at 11.3 kg (25 lbs). For optimal safety and to extend the lifespan of your arrows, we highly recommend using bows with a draw weight of around 9 kg (20 lbs). Before each shot, it is absolutely essential to inspect the integrity of the arrow—check that the spruce shaft is not cracked or splintered, and ensure the safety head is firmly attached. Damaged arrows must be immediately removed from service for safety reasons.

Materials and Craftsmanship

This arrow is produced with a high degree of careful handcrafting. The shaft is made of spruce wood, offering a great balance between flexibility and low weight. The flights consist of three natural bird feathers measuring 12.7 cm (5 inches) in length. Two feathers are pure white, while the third index feather (cock feather) is grey, facilitating quick and correct nocking onto the bowstring. The feathers are secured at both ends with a tight binding, which prevents them from peeling off when passing through the bow or being pulled out of undergrowth. The rear end features a durable black plastic nock for a reliable grip on the string.

The Historical Context of Practice Arrows

Although LARP battles are a modern phenomenon, the concept of arrows with blunt or widened tips dates back centuries. Historically, archers used blunt arrows for two primary reasons. The first was hunting small game and birds, where a sharp broadhead would unnecessarily tear the skin and meat, whereas a blunt head would stun the animal and preserve the valuable pelt. The second use was for archery practice and military training maneuvers. The modern LARP arrow is the direct evolutionary successor to these historical practice arrows, utilizing modern shock-absorbing materials that allow shooting at human targets without fatal consequences.

How to Properly Care for Your Ammunition

To ensure your arrows serve you a long time, they must be stored in a dry place. Wood is a natural material and can warp if exposed to prolonged moisture. The best way to store arrows is vertically in a quiver or in a dedicated box so the feathers do not get crushed. If the natural fletching gets ruffled or wet during a battle, it can often be revived by gently holding it over hot steam—the feathers will beautifully straighten out and regain their volume.

To accompany these arrows, we recommend acquiring a high-quality traditional or self bow with a draw weight that complies with the 11.3 kg (25 lbs) limit. For comfortable carrying of your ammunition, a spacious leather back or hip quiver will be invaluable. Do not forget to protect your forearm with a leather bracer (arm guard), and use an archery glove or tab to protect your fingers when drawing the string.
