Churburg S18 Pauldrons (1400–1450)

A Jewel from Churburg

The prototype for this armour is the unique set cataloged as number S18, which remains to this day in the collection of Churburg Castle (Castel Coira) in South Tyrol. The original, attributed to famous Lombard workshops (likely Milanese), belonged to the family of the Advocates of Matsch (Vögte von Matsch), the historical owners of the castle. Although traditionally dated to the first half of the 15th century, some scholars place its origin as early as 1370–1410. These pauldrons are particularly exceptional due to the integrated front besagews (roundels) which protect the armpit but, unlike separately tied roundels, are an articulated part of the pauldron itself.

Construction and Finish

The shoulders are made of mild steel (approx. 1.6 mm / 16 gauge). This thickness provides an excellent balance between durability and weight. The surface features a satin finish, which corresponds to many surviving museum exhibits and avoids the distracting, mirror-like shine of modern stainless steel. The plates are articulated (lame construction), ensuring a sufficient range of arm motion for fencing.

Usage Warning: This is a high-quality replica suitable for stage combat, historical reenactment, and LARP. Although the steel is approx. 1.6 mm thick, this product is not certified for full-contact battles like Buhurt (HMB, Battle of the Nations), where specific hardness and thickness requirements apply. For comfortable wear and impact distribution, we recommend wearing a gambeson and chainmail voiders underneath to fill the gap in the armpit.

Technical Specifications and Dimensions

As this is a handcrafted item, dimensions may vary slightly from piece to piece.

Material Mild Steel (approx. 1.6 mm / 16 ga)
Finish Satin
Dimension A (Top Width) approx. 21 cm (8.3")
Dimension B (Bottom Width) approx. 15.3 cm (6.0")
Dimension C (Outer Arc Length) approx. 39 cm (15.4")
Dimension D (Inner Length) approx. 21.5 cm (8.5")

Armour Care

To keep these pauldrons serving you as long as possible without rusting, give them a little care:

  • Preservation: The steel is not stainless. After every use, and especially if the armour gets wet or sweaty, wipe it dry and treat it with preservation oil (e.g., WD-40, Ballistol, or mineral oil).
  • Storage: Store the armour in a dry place. Check for signs of rust during long-term storage.
  • Straps: Treat the leather straps occasionally with leather conditioner to keep them flexible and prevent cracking.

Recommended Accessories

These pauldrons look best when combined with a Milanese-style breastplate and a quality gambeson. Don't forget arm and elbow protection that matches the style of the early 15th century.
