Medieval Leather Ankle Pilgrim Boots for LARP and Re-enactment
Historical Context and Modern Usage
Leather ankle boots of a similar cut accompanied humanity from the early Middle Ages right through to the early modern period. They provided essential protection for the feet against uneven terrain and harsh weather. These specific boots are based on popular peasant and pilgrim designs. Today, they are widely used for historical re-enactment, LARP battles, and cosplay. To ensure modern comfort and greater safety on today's surfaces (such as wet grass, stones, or tarmac), the historical leather sole is supplemented with a durable synthetic rubber outsole. This modification prevents slipping and extends the lifespan of the boot, although it is a slight compromise from the strict historical authenticity of traditional turnshoes.
Construction and Features
The upper is manufactured from genuine cowhide, ensuring long-lasting durability. A prominent feature is the open design cuff and the longitudinally split upper around the instep. Please note that there is no tongue underneath this split, which is a natural characteristic of this model. Any resulting gap can easily be adjusted by the thickness of the historical socks or leg wraps you choose to wear. If the shaft or instep feels too tight, simply loosen the knots on the leather straps (you can use a nail to help) and lengthen them. Conversely, if the boot is too loose, shorten the straps.
Available Sizes and Custom Tailoring
These leather boots are available in standard EU sizes. If you have an atypical foot shape, we also offer a custom-made option. When choosing this variant, we will manufacture the boots exactly according to the measurement chart, which please fill out after completing your order. Important note: If you wish to order custom-made footwear from us and you wear orthopaedic insoles, it is necessary to send these insoles to us. Our shoemaker will fit them exactly into the boots, so you can look forward to them fitting you like a glove.
How to Properly Care for Your Boots
For your boots to serve you perfectly for as long as possible, the leather requires regular care. The leather is treated during production with palm oil, animal fat, and beeswax. For subsequent maintenance, we highly recommend using a quality leather balsam containing beeswax. This will soften the material, waterproof it, and give it a richer, darker shade. Leather oil or standard shoe polish will also work well, allowing you to mask minor scuffs, such as worn toes. Never dry the boots near an open fire or on a radiator, as the leather could harden and crack. Avoid prolonged soaking; these boots are not wellingtons and are not fully waterproof.
Important Notice Regarding Colours
Black, dark brown, and light brown (natural) colours are dyed completely through the leather. If you select a different shade, the colour is achieved by applying a special topcoat. Over time, this lacquered finish may develop small cracks in the areas where the shoe bends. These special colour variants are more suitable for one-off or occasional wear (for example, at a historical wedding).
