Brown Gothic Leather Lace-Up Ankle Boots

Historical Context And Practical Use In Combat

At the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, ankle footwear with front lacing and a slightly elongated toe was the absolute standard. It was popularly worn by simple craftsmen, well-travelled merchants, and experienced mercenaries. The lacing allowed the shoe to be firmly fixed to the foot, which was crucial for moving through deep mud or difficult terrain. Today, these historical leather boots represent a highly functional piece of equipment. A smooth leather sole is often unsuitable for contact historical fencing (HEMA) for safety reasons. This model is therefore masterfully equipped with a solid rubber sole, which guarantees excellent traction and stability during quick lunges and dodges, without visually disrupting the period illusion.

Leather Care And Safety Warnings

Leather is a natural material that loses its elasticity and wears out faster without regular care. From the factory, these boots are gently treated with a beeswax balm. After every demanding event, clear them of dust or dried mud and grease them with a high-quality leather balm or cobbler's oil. This softens the leather, waterproofs it against moisture, and gives it a beautiful, rich patina. Scuffs from fencing can easily be retouched with brown shoe polish. If the footwear gets wet, stuff it with old newspaper and let it dry very slowly at room temperature. Under no circumstances should you dry the boots on a hot radiator, near a blazing campfire, or in harsh summer sunlight! Rapid drying would cause irreversible hardening and cracking of the leather.

Recommended Accessories

To complement these great universal boots, we highly recommend purchasing period woollen chausses (leggings) and medieval linen braies (underpants), providing you with an absolutely authentic and highly functional foundation for your historical attire.
