Medieval Women's Leather Shoes Court Lady with Woven Edge

The Elegance and Taste of the Medieval Elite

Low leather shoes with an elongated toe were a highly popular choice among the nobility and wealthy bourgeoisie in the High and Late Middle Ages. Unlike the common people, who wore mostly rough and purely functional footwear, the upper classes could afford decorative elements. This is beautifully evident here in the contrasting leather strip that is skilfully woven through the holes along the entire top edge of the shoe. The slightly upturned toe (even if it does not reach the extremes of classic poulaines) clearly shows that the owner does not have to wade through deep mud in the fields. The sturdy sole with a low heel then offers a compromise between a historical look and the necessary comfort for today's wearers.

How to Care for Leather Shoes

Genuine leather requires your attention to maintain its beauty and longevity. Straight from production, the shoes are already treated with a high-quality beeswax balm. To prevent the leather from drying out and cracking, regularly rub leather oil or wax balm into it. The material will thus be nourished, softened, and better resist moisture. Bear in mind that the leather will darken slightly after applying the balm. Always allow wet footwear to dry very slowly at room temperature after an event. Under no circumstances should you dry them near an open fire, on a radiator, or in direct sunlight – the leather would irreparably stiffen and crack. Any scuffs can be easily masked with tinted shoe polish.

Important Information on Colours and Sizes

The most common and natural colours for this footwear are black, dark brown, and light brown (natural). If you select a different, unconventional shade in your order, this colouration is achieved by applying a special covering lacquer paint. However, this layer tends to crack or flake slightly over time in the stressed bending areas. For occasional wear (e.g., a few events a year), this is perfectly adequate, but for high stress, we highly recommend choosing naturally dyed leathers.

Keep in mind that footwear with a smooth sole can be more slippery on wet grass, cobblestones, or in mud than modern shoes with a deep tread. If you wear orthotic insoles and opt for our custom-made shoe production, it is essential that you physically post these insoles to us. We will seat them precisely into your new shoes to provide you with maximum support.

We recommend you purchase a beautiful medieval dress and a decorated leather belt from our range to accompany these elegant shoes, bringing your court lady costume to absolute perfection.
